The object of the treatment is to set into operation the normal flow of Ki. Ki is the animating force that gives life to every part of the human organism. This flow can only be achieved by inducing a relaxation response to the nervous system and by allowing the breathing pattern to expand within the body.

An average treatment usually lasts about an hour. Each client prior to the session completes an intake form requesting health conditions and/or challenges. Traditionally, Shiatsu is done on the floor using a special mattress called a futon. This allows the practitioner to use various rocking, stretching and manipulation techniques that are otherwise difficult to do on a table.

Shiatsu is performed with the client fully clothed. For best results, the receiver should wear loose fitting clothes, made of natural fibers (i.e. cotton). Meals should not be eaten up to 2 hours before a session.

After the treatment, you will generally feel more relaxed. It is recommended that you drink plenty of water following your treatment. Best effects of the session are experienced when you do not overeat the night following the session. Sore or stiff areas of the body are positive and are usually related to the areas of the body that need attention the most. It is not unusual to experience a range of emotions from feeling full of energy to being moved to tears. Please contact the practitioner regarding any concerns you may have before or after treatment.
